A Mutant of Streptococcus pneumonia That Exhibits Thermosensitive Penicillin Tolerance and the Paradoxical Effect
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Mutants of Streptococcus pneumoniae that contain active autolysin and yet cannot be induced to lyse during treatment with penicillin (Lyt+Tol+ mutants) have been described. We have now shown that these mutants are temperature dependent (32 "C); at 37 "C these bacteria underwent penicillin-induced lysis. In addition, mutants at the lysis-permissive temperature showed the socalled 'paradoxical response' to penicillin. Temperature shift experiments indicated that the change from tolerant to lytic response or vice versa is a fast process. No differences were detected in autolysin specific activity or in the kinetics of inhibition of protein, peptidoglycan and teichoic acid syntheses in cells treated with penicillin at 32 and 37 "C. The results of genetic crosses indicated that the thermosensitivity of penicillin-induced autolysis in the Lyt+ Tol+ mutants is not a property of the autolytic enzyme itself. The observations suggest that the thermosensitive process in the mutants represents either a step($ in autolysin regulation or involves some difference in the structure of the cell walls produced at 32 "C versus 37 "C.

متن کاملIn-Vitro Effect of Natural Honey on the Growth of Streptococcus sanguinis
Background and Aim: Streptococcus sanguinis (S. sanguinis) is one of the effective bacteria in the formation of caries and periodontal diseases which are caused by dental plaque. Currently, the use of natural honey (NH) is considered as a method of reducing S. sanguinis and S. mutans in saliva, which results in reducing the dental plaque. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects o...

متن کاملA Novel Metallo-β-Lactamase Involved in the Ampicillin Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49136 Strain
Streptococcus pneumoniae, a penicillin-sensitive bacterium, is recognized as a major cause of pneumonia and is treated clinically with penicillin-based antibiotics. The rapid increase in resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics affects 450 million people globally and results in 4 million deaths every year. To unveil the mechanism of resistance of S. pneumoniae is thus an important issue t...

Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most important causes of pneumonia, meningitis and septicemia. Decades after successful treatment of this infection with penicillin, frequency of penicillin resistance is reportedly on the rise throughout the world. This cross sectional study was designed in Yazd to determine the prevalence of pneumococcal pharyngeal carriers and its succept...
